Record group RG 79-1 consists of the minutes of meetings of the Michigan Aeronautics Commission (formerly the Board of Aeronautics) for the years 1929-1962. Includes some records on microfilm (reel number 4788). Among the items of the Commission's agenda were rules and regulations governing airports, airport managers, airfields, and aviation schools. Annual financial reports and allocations from the State Aeronautics Fund are also included in the minutes. Since the Commission regulates all air activities, its rulings on license applications for airport managers and flight instructors are published in the minutes. And as late as 1939, the Commission approved the extension of airmail service in the state. It also establishes renatl fees for concessions and hangars at city airports, approves construction of airport facilities, and awards bids on construction projects that include contracts to turf and recondition runways, construct hangars, and extend facilities of existing airports. There are minutes of the discussion and debate on the Northeast Detroit City Airport proposal for Warren Township, a project begun in 1952, and the proposed landing strip at the Michigan State College. The minutes of June 3, 1958 contain a synopsis (thereafter a yearly feature) of aviation matters considered by the Legislature. The same report also discusses the Houghton Lake Airport lease and the Mackinac Island landing strip.
